Summer fun finally here!

Only if your car has air-con

Drimmelen.
For the first time this summer there were traffic jams towards the North Sea beach, reports the Brabants Dagblad today.

But not everyone stayed in the car for a couple of hours to cool down. It was "pleasantly crowded" on the beach by the swimming pool at the campsite Biesbosch Marina Drimmelen. Children enjoyed playing on the beach and cooling off in the water while others relaxed and sunbathed.
Nearby Drimmelen harbour also had plenty of activity with people enjoying the sun on their boats.

Dutch police must learn to tweet

Police union sees little in it.

From September police officers will receive twittering lessons. The "social media master class" will ensure officers can use the online messaging website.

The initiative comes from the Digital Forensic Investigation Department. Frans-Jan Mulschlegel from the department says in the latest edition of Police Academy magazine that social media should be a standard part of officer training. The police union sees little value in it.

However it comes with a warning. "If you want to post something that is not consistent with  your police work or that you might pay for later, then you just shouldn't do it" says Mr Mulschlegel in the Metro today.

PIN payments "a disaster"

Checkout workers in training for London 2012

Customers in the Netherlands, used to swiping their payment cards and keeping them, are experiencing problems with a new system where they must insert their card into the terminal and leave it there until the transaction is complete, De Telegraaf reports today.

The change in procedure is making many customers forget to remove their card so usually sedentary checkout workers are having to go after customers to return their cards to them. This new "100 metres with credit card relay", while great for supermarket workers' fitness, leads to delays at the till and therefore longer queues.

In addition to confusion over when to take it out, some confounded customers are also experiencing insertion difficulties as "sometimes the slot is on top and sometimes it's on the bottom"

The new system was launched this spring to protect consumers from card skimming.

Fewer robberies in Amsterdam

The number of robberies in the city over the last 6 months fell by 29 percent. The attacks have been more violent than previously though, and jewellers and wholesalers are relatively more likely to become victims.

National Police figures showed a drop to 181 for the past 6 months compared to 254 for the same period last year. The municipality claims this is a result of it's tougher stance on youth crime. Metro newspaper reported that robbers are often heavily armed. The municipality announced it's clampdown to combat the problem will continue.

Many more Poles than expected

The increase in the number of migrants from middle and eastern European countries, especially Poland, is much greater than expected.

VVD ministers called the surge in labour migration "the most important development" in years.

In 2004 the Central Planning Bureau estimated the number of migrants would be between 7500 and 15000. That was on top of  approximately 10000 seasonal workers. By 2008 there were an estimated 100000 Eastern Europeans and this year there are 200000 registered.

According to Social Affairs minister Henk Kamp, the eastern Europeans are welcome in the Netherlands as long as they work and can provide for themselves, and not rely on state benefits.

VVD member criticised over Wilders tweet

VVD vice-chairman Mark Verheijen yesterday caused a storm with a tweet about Geert Wilders and the attacks in Norway, reports AD.

Verheijen wrote "Oh poor Geert. Who cares about the 77 deaths. We almost forgot that HE, of course, is Breivik's main victim" The VVD deputy was attempting to demonstrate his annoyance that the Attacks in Norway have been used politically by Wilders and other parties.

Verheijen reported later that it was not his intention to attack Wilders or left-wing parties, only to keep the atrocities in Norway from being 'abused' in political debate.

Last week Wilders, Groenlink and the PvdA fiercely debated the background to the attacks and possible connections to the Netherlands.

Mortgage rules tightened from today.

From today it is no longer possible to obtain a mortgage that doesn't need to be repaid during the term of the loan, reports Parool. It is also no longer possible for a mortgage to exceed the property's value.

This is due to the new code of conduct for mortgage lenders. The code is designed to protect borrowers against borrowing more than they can repay.

The federation of insurers, the Dutch association of banks, the treasury and the financial markets authority want the new code to be binding, even for mortgages arranged under the national mortgage guarantee.
